What is Lifestyle Photography?

I photograph families with a lifestyle approach — but what does that even mean?
“Lifestyle” is a word that you might see thrown around in the photography industry, and honestly, each artist may see it a little differently.
For me, defining “lifestyle” starts with understanding other types of portraiture on either side of the spectrum. In traditional portraiture, everyone is smiling, looking at the camera. The first thing that comes to mind is our church directory photos, where the photographer directed me to place my hands on my husband’s shoulder and angle my head a little… a little more… there, just right. Candid documentary shots could be as simple as people going about their day, and the photographer is just there to document it. I believe that there are photographers who do both of these types of photography beautifully, and I’m not here to be snobbish. But somewhere in between those two is something called Lifestyle Photography, and that’s where you’ll find me.
Lifestyle does, in fact, include posed shots. But maybe it’s better to think of it as directing. I lead you along because that’s MY job. I like to think of my role as creating a safe space for you and your loved ones to come alive, to love and be loved. I might give prompts, or maybe we’ll play a game or do an action. But one of my favorite parts is when families relax into the poses and begin to interact as their natural selves. It’s like they forget there’s a camera there. They’re still posed beautifully (and I might remind you to sit up straight or reposition your arm), but your true selves begin to unfold, and we start to tell your story, together.
Lifestyle Photography is for the family who loves to be together and connect on a heart-level. For the mom who cherishes all the little details of this season and knows that pictures are the only way to hit the “pause button”. For the dad who likes to joke with his kiddos and make them laugh. For the kids who might want to run about — or snuggle into the arms of the ones who care so deeply for them.
Lifestyle Photography is honesty, beauty, and joy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should my child wear?

Whatever is comfortable, but please avoid graphics or neon clothing. Because the backdrop is gray, I recommend staying away from gray as well. All individual shots of toddlers and preschoolers will be taken bust/shoulders up. Babies and sibling photos may include more of their bottom half.

How will I get my photos?

Families who have pre-registered have been emailed a secure password-protected online Shootproof gallery. Your director will also let you know when the gallery is ready to view. You’ll have your choice of 3-5 images, edited in classic color and black and white. Some children are more expressive and more comfortable in front of the camera and may have more photos in their gallery. The entire school will be in the same password protected gallery, divided by class and student. Sibling photos can be found in the older child's gallery. If you would prefer a private gallery, please contact the photographer.

Your prints can be easily ordered from the site, and digitals can be purchased and downloaded at your convenience. YOU get to choose which images you print and display and gift. You can even opt to send the link to family members, and they can order the size prints they prefer. All physical prints and products will be delivered to school within two weeks of the ordering deadline, or shipped to your home for an additional cost.

How do I receive a class composite?

Each print and digital order will receive a free class composite photo. These will be delivered to school at a later date this fall/winter.

When checking out, does "I'll pickup" mean it will be delivered to school?

That's exactly right! If you prefer your prints to be shipped to your home or a family member's home within the U.S., click "ship to me."

Will Abi Schmit Photography use my child's image online or print marketing?

I may contact you for permission to use your child's image on social media and in my marketing, but I will never share without your permission, and I never share a child's name or identifying information. Your safety is my priority!

My child was absent. When is Make-Up Day?

Abi will return to school on the morning of Tuesday, October 24. Registration is required for students who were previously photographed but would like retakes.

Can you retouch my child's photo?

All photos have been edited and color corrected, but if you need special retouching (for example, a scratch or snotty nose), you can add to cart in the "Retouch" menu. Digital images, if purchased, will be delivered electronically within 5 days.

How can I use my digital image?

If you purchase a digital image or full gallery, you will receive a Print Release and be able to print wherever you prefer to receive your prints from. You are free to use in Christmas cards, or share on social media. Giving photo credit to Abi Schmit Photography online is always appreciated.

I have more questions. How do I contact you?

Feel free to contact me at abischmit.photo@ gmail (dot) com if you have any further questions. Please do not contact me through my website contact form on the homepage unless you have interest in booking a session. Thank you!
